This type of RFID installation is for a basic tracking system with RTLS capability (Real Time Location System).

RTLS uses Concentric Triangulation to determine the location of a tag within the building. This is accurate to within a 5 foot area. RTLS is perfect for locating items in a warehouse or locating equipment in a business.

Each reader sends out waves in different strengths. When a tag is "hit" by a ring, the reader keeps checking - lowering the freqency of the wave till the tag is no longer read.

In the example to the right, you see that Reader 1 can see the tag in ring 5. Reader 2 can see the tag in ring 6. Reader 3 can not see the tag. Therefore you know the tag is in the area between reader 1 and 2, closer to Reader 1.

This configuration will provide notification that tagged items are in the building and where they are inside the building.

The layout above shows the basic setup for a RFID system with RTLS. This system includes:

• 4 RFID Readers. Range for the reader is up to 1500 feet. Depending on the size of the room, you may need more.
• 1 RFID Server with a built-in Collector and Concentrator. This can connect to the reader via a wireless or wired connection. A wired connection is typical for a basic setup. Wireless is available.

The functions in this setup are if you wish to locate a tag within the building. This sytem uses concentric triangulation to determine the location of the tag. Each reader sends out waves to pinpoint the area in which the tag sits.
